New browntop bentgrass, Musket, rifles into Germinal’s golf green mixtures

Germinal has announced that it has gained exclusive UK, Ireland and European distribution rights for new browntop bentgrass cultivar, Musket, and that the new variety will be included in the company’s range of greens-specific seed mixtures in 2020.

Germinal’s bentgrasses have been used to overseed the greens on the championship course at Galgorm Castle in Northern Ireland.

Musket, which was bred using germplasm that combines early spring green-up traits with improved summer performance, will make its debut on the BSPB’s Series G Table G1 (greens, close mown 4-7 mm trials) in 2020 where it is anticipated to rank amongst the top rated browntop bentgrasses.

“Musket is the latest addition to Germinal’s extensive bentgrass portfolio and fits perfectly into our range of high quality browntop and creeping bentgrass mixtures which includes products to suit every circumstance and budget,” explains Richard Brown, Amenity Sales Manager for Germinal GB.

As well as offering all the intrinsic benefits of a modern browntop bentgrass – prostrate growth habit, high shoot density, good wear tolerance and reduced input requirement – Musket also exhibits excellent resistance to fusarium.

“With the recent loss of several key fungicides already compelling greenkeepers to overseed more frequently to ensure their greens remains disease-free, selecting a naturally disease resistant cultivar such as Musket is the logical strategy,” Mr Brown adds. “We have therefore added Musket to our acclaimed AberMajesty and ForeFront Greens seed mixtures, thereby bolstering the varietal diversity and natural disease resistance of these products.”

The final specification for Germinal’s 2020 range of golf-specific seed mixtures will be officially launched at BTME in January.
